Scam Alert – 1.31.18

Person posing as Oncor employee offering to install a smart meter.

Our department received reports of a male subject going door to door attempting to offer smart meters to residents. Essentially, the scam involves the male soliciting smart meters and posing as an Oncor representative. He then tells residents that if they do not switch to a smart meter, Oncor will charge $200 and requests financial information and/or a copy of their electric bills.

The male is described as a white or Hispanic male, 5’6″-5’8″, late 20’s, dark hair, closely trimmed beard, stocky build, wearing a green reflective vest and an Oncor shirt, carrying a clipboard and smart meter paperwork. If you encounter a subject matching this description or encounter someone attempting the same scam, please contact police dispatch (via 9-1-1 or 817-281-1000) so an officer can be dispatched to the area.
